ATEC/FREEDM SYSTEMS CENTER The Advanced Transportation Energy Center (ATEC) at NC State was established in 2008 to develop electric drive systems technology, the grid interface systems for those vehicles, and to work with industry and government stakeholders to address the vehicle, infrastructure and consumer issues that impede the electrification of the transportation sector. The Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center at NC State is an NSF Engineering Research Center whose mission is to revolutionize the nation’s power grid and speed renewable energy and energy management systems into every home and business. The Center works with four partner universities and over 50 industrial companies to perform the research, education and innovation activities that will bring about an efficient, robust and sustainable electrical system. The two Centers are housed in the new Keystone Science Center on the renowned Centennial Campus of NC State University. Tours will visit the Centers’ 5,000 sq.ft. laboratory, which houses all of the vehicle, power system equipment and tools that enable the groundbreaking research they are charged with undertaking. DUKE ENERGY ENVISION CENTER In 2009, Duke Energy created the Envision Center on the Centennial Campus of NC State University in partnership with Advanced Energy. The Envision Center is a state-of-the-art smart grid technology demonstration center where you can experience Duke Energy’s vision of what energy will be in the near future when enabled by digital, smart grid technologies. During this tour, you will meet with Duke Energy’s plug-in electric vehicle specialists and hear their insights on how these automobiles might interface in the future with the smart grid. Learn what Duke Energy, one of the largest energy companies in America, is doing to create opportunities for PEV owners to save money, conserve energy and improve the environment. |
